Dear Saints,
In 2005, perennial Gold-glove baseball player Ryne Sandberg was inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame. In an era when most players are loyal only to their paycheck and endorsement contract, when there is rampant fraud and deception in the business world, and when ethics and morality are conceded for short term personal gains, Sandberg’s speech at his induction defines a person who is devoted to an institution.
“I was in awe every time I walked onto the field. That’s respect. I was taught you never ever disrespected your opponents or your teammates or your organization or your manager, and never your uniform. ….Respect. A lot of people say this honor validates my career, but I didn’t work hard for validation. I didn’t play the game right because I saw a reward at the end of the tunnel. I played it right because that’s what you’re supposed to do, play it right and with respect. If this validates anything, it’s that guys who taught me the game …did what they were supposed to do and I did what I was supposed to do.”
Faith, loyalty and commitment to the Church, institutions and schools are eroding. Yet without them, we are weakened and our sense of what is important is often diminished.

Today, your school needs your commitment. There is no doubt that DeSales has had a significant impact on your life, what you value and what you continue to do for your faith and family. We are a 96-year old institution that is worthy of your support and investment. Many of you who registered on DeSalesAlumni.org have already supported “The Tradition Continues” Annual Campaign. Thank you as we surpass the $35,000 mark. I humbly ask that you do so as well by “Clicking and pledging”
